Whose is eligible to attend Toledo Early College?
Students who will enter high school for the first time as freshmen, ethnic minorities, English as a Second Language learners, students who qualify for free/reduced lunch, students who are the first generation to attend college. Not every qualification is required. For example, if you qualify for free and/or reduced lunch, you do not need to be a student of minority status also.

What is the application process for students interested in attending Toledo Early College High School?
Parents and students must attend a general information meeting prior to receiving an application. It is important for parents and students to fully understand curriculum and student behavior expectations, including graduation requirements prior to making a decision about Toledo Early College.

How is Toledo Early College High School different from a traditional high school?
Toledo Early College’s academic calendar is aligned with UT’s academic calendar. Students attend high school and college courses simultaneously. Students get dual credits from college courses. For example, a composition course that satisfies the first-year English course for UT may serve to satisfy the third year of a high school English course at Toledo Early College. We have a small school environment, students are able to take advantage of unique opportunities, including activities.

Also, students have a greater opportunity to participate in the development and growth of Toledo Early College. Parents are asked to play active and on-going roles in students’ education, and the staff is highly trained.

How many students can go to Toledo Early College?
Maximum of 100 students per grade level can be accepted. A maximum of 400 students can be enrolled in the school in any given year.

When will the general information meetings related to the application process be held?
In November, the dates and times of Toledo Early College informational meetings will be posted on the Toledo Early College web site in multiple locations, including “calendar and recruitment” tabs.

What types of courses do students take at Toledo Early College?
Ideally, students take English 1 and 2, World Studies and American Studies, 9th grade Science, Biology, and possibly Anatomy or Environmental Science and Algebra 1, Geometry, and Algebra 2.

What types of courses do students take at UT?
Students take 28-to-30 general education core courses that are required of all UT students. Those general education courses also include seven core courses (English 3, English 4, Government, a Social Studies elective, two full semesters of physical education and one semester of health) which are part of the 21-credit requirement students need to obtain in order to meet one of two graduation requirements. Students must also pass the Ohio Graduation Test to graduate from high school.

Who determines or selects students’ courses?
High school courses are determined by TPS and Ohio Department of Education requirements. UT courses that serve to meet TPS credits also follow those requirements. Elective courses at UT are determined by TPS and UT staff with input from students and parents.

What if my student is unable to pass UT courses?
UT courses carry dual credits, providing students with high school and college credits. Students must pass both high school and college courses to meet the 21-credit requirement needed to graduate from Toledo Early College.

What types of transcripts will students have while at Toledo Early College and when students graduate from Toledo Early College?
Students will have two permanent transcripts while at Toledo Early College and when students graduate from Toledo Early College. One transcript will be from Toledo Early College and the other transcript will be from UT.

Will college students be in classes with Toledo Early College’s students?
Yes.

What are the high school students to college students’ ratio?
Per our agreement with UT and to truly allow high school students the experience of a college course, in a class size of about 23 students, only three of them will likely be Toledo Early College students. If the class size is about 50 students, we may have as many as eight Toledo Early College students in a single class with college students.

Are there other limitations that dictate college courses high school students can take?
Yes. Our students are taught primarily by full professors, limiting the number of sections of courses available to Toledo Early College students. For example, not every Toledo Early College student who qualifies for a UT composition (English) course will get the course the first time it is requested. All qualifying students will have an opportunity to take required university level courses.

How will parents be notified of students’ academic progress?
TPS teachers will provide parents with quarterly interim reports, grade cards, mandatory parent conferences and parent conferences on an as needed basis, E-mails and internet-based grade reports. A UT counselor will request information from college professors. Since professors are not required to file interim reports, there is no guarantee they will respond.

Can UT credits be transferred to other colleges and/or universities?
Generally speaking, yes. However, parents/students will be responsible for researching guidelines for transferring UT credits to the other colleges and/or universities.

Are all college courses and required books available free of charge?
Yes. Toledo Early College will pay for a total of 60 college credits.Toledo Early College will pay for all required college textbooks during students’ high school experiences. Toledo Early College will not pay for martial arts uniforms or sticks for stick fighting.

Is my student guaranteed to earn 60 college credits?
No. The number of college credits earned by students is dependent on the students ability to manage effectively taking high school and college courses simultaneously.

What is the grading scale at Toledo Early College?
Students must earn at least a score of 75%, which is equivalent to the letter grade of “C-” to pass a course at Toledo Early College. Students must also earn a “C-” to earn high school credit for a college course. Students either pass or fail at Toledo Early College. Our grades are: A, B, C, and/or F. Specific percentages for each letter grade are listed under the “curriculum” tab.

Can my student makeup courses in the TPS Summer School Academy and/or through the TPS Phoenix program?
Students can recover up to a maximum of two credits, during the high school experience that may be transferred to Toledo Early College. However, students can only earn credit through summer school and/or Phoenix if the student failed the course (s) previously.

In addition, the two recovery credits can not be in the same content area. For example, a student can not make up 9th grade science and biology, or algebra 1 and geometry. If a student makes up a biology and an English credit, the student will not be permitted to take any other failed subjects outside of Toledo Early College. If the student fails courses in any of the other content areas, those subjects will need to be repeated at Toledo Early College.

What happens if students do not pass all of their courses?
Students are expected to pass at least 75% of their courses the first semester of their freshmen year. Students must earn credits to remain at Toledo Early College. We will work with students who are considered in academic emergency, by providing tutorial services and informing them of additional academic assistance to help to improve their grades. However, if students are still failing to meet academic standards by the end of the first semester of the students’ sophomore year, an alternate school placement will likely be necessary.

If students are in Toledo Excel and/or Young Scholars will the Toledo Early College grading scales prevent them from remaining eligible to participate in those programs?
Your student has to maintain the required GPA for those programs whether at Toledo Early College or any other school. However, it may be easier for your student to earn those required grades at other schools. The Toledo Early College’s courses are based on a rigorous college preparatory curriculum. If students earn grades of “Cs” consistently, a Toledo Excel or Ohio State Young Scholars opportunity will be jeopardized.

How many credits are required for students to graduate from Toledo Early College?
Twenty-one credits are required to meet graduation requirements, including passage of the Ohio Graduation Test. Students need four credits of English, three credits each of social studies, mathematics, and science, two full semesters of physical education, a full semester of health, totaling 14 required courses. The seven other credits will be based on elective courses such as computer courses, foreign languages, fine arts, etc. A four-year educational plan is posted on the Toledo Early College web site under the “curriculum” tab.

How do I contact my students’ professors?
Professors will work with Toledo Early College staff through the UT liaison who serves as our link to UT. Through this unique relationship, the Toledo Early College staff will make every effort to keep parents informed about students’ progress in college courses.

Will Toledo Early College students be identified as high school students to UT professors?
No. However, if UT professors want to learn if students are Toledo Early College students, they can.

Are Toledo Early College students required to attend college classes when TPS cancels school or delays the start of the school day?
Yes!

If TPS is on a two-hour delay, what time will students be required to come to school?
When TPS delays the start of the school day by two hours, students who normally report to school at 7:55 a.m., would report to school at 9:55 a.m. Students who would normally report to school at 9:01 a.m. would report to school at 11:01 a.m.

What are the earliest and latest times students can report to Toledo Early College and leave?
For high school classes, students should not report to the building prior to 7:30 a.m., excluding prior arrangements Toledo Early College staff and/or UT staff have made with students. Students are expected to leave the building when their last scheduled high school class ends. Students remaining after school must be supervised by teachers and/or advisors, or in a supervised area such as the library or computer lab. Students who take college courses that end beyond the high school day are expected to leave campus when the courses end or report to a supervised area, including the computer lab, writing lab and/or library.

I am thinking about sending my student to Toledo Early College. Can students shadow other students at Toledo Early College?
Shadowing experiences must be pre-approved by the Toledo Early College principal. Parents will be required to complete a guest forms prior to students being approved for shadow days. Shadow days are limited to students’ winter and spring breaks. Guest forms are located under the “recruitment” tab.

Is there a parent-teacher group or organization I can join?
Yes. When students are accepted at Toledo Early College, all parents will be notified of meetings for parents.

Can students participate in sports and activities?
They can play sports for their neighborhood schools. Toledo Early College students can participate in Toledo Early College activities, including student government, drama and chess clubs, yearbook newspaper, science Olympiad, and history day. School dances, including Prom, are held on the main campus at UT.

Can guests from other high schools come to Toledo Early College functions?
Yes. However, an application process determines if guests are suitable for admission.

What if a student decides Toledo Early College is not the school for him or her and the parent withdraws the student from Toledo Early College, can the student return the next semester or the following school year, if the student realizes Toledo Early College was the best school choice after all?
No.

If my student gets in a fight, what happens?
Students who fight are expelled from Toledo Early College, permanently. The TPS discipline code is otherwise in effect, which is posted on our web page under the “attendance/discipline/dress code” tab.

How will my student get to school?
There are no dedicated bus lines for Toledo Early College. Student will need to be transported to Toledo Early College by private vehicles or TARTA.

What about free and reduced lunch?
Toledo Early College does not have a free and/or reduced lunch program. We are working on offering a similar program with the UT food vendor. However, nothing definite is in place. Students can bring lunches and refrigerate and microwave them at Toledo Early College.

How can my student learn the UT campus?
You can arrange a tour through UT’s admissions office, take an on-line tour, or request a map and walk around the campus with your student. It is your responsibility to make sure your student knows where to go when the time comes, relating to the locations of college courses.

How will my student get to main campus for classes?
The UT shuttle service will transport students. Students who drive are encouraged to use the shuttle as well.

Are placement tests required before my student can take college courses?
Yes. Students must take and pass placement tests for English, science and mathematics.

What happens if my student is unable to pass UT placement tests?
Students will need to take their third years of English, mathematics and science with Toledo Early College staff. However, at some point your student will be required to take the equivalent of English 4 at the college level. The primary purpose for your student to be a part of this program is to take advantage of the early college experience. If that does not happen, your student should be in a traditional school. Remember, students can not graduate from Toledo Early College without successfully passing college courses.

Who determines when students are ready for college courses?
The students’ academic performances, attendance and disciplinary histories are taken into account by teachers, counselor and principal when decisions are made for students to be placed in college courses. To remain in college course, students must pass high school and college course schedules.

This is a question about scheduling conflicts. If students miss part of a class at Toledo Early College because of college schedules, are students expected to make up work missed under those circumstances?
Yes.

If students super excel in a particular subject, can students work independently to complete course requirements at an accelerated pace?
Yes. However, the teacher of record for the content area will determine if students are eligible for independent studies in specific content areas.

Is there a dress code?
Yes. It will be enforced strictly. It is posted on our web site under the “attendance/discipline/dress code” tab.

Is there an attendance policy?
Yes. It is clearly explained in the contract you and your student will be required to sign prior to the start of school. There is more information on the Toledo Early College web site under the “curriculum” tab.

What is the school day schedule?
We have staggered start times for the school day. Some students will begin at 7:55 a.m. and continue until 2:51 p.m. or even 4:00 p.m. Other students may begin at 9:01 a.m. and their school day will end at 4 p.m. The hourly school day schedule is posted on web site under the “calendars” tab.

What is the teacher-to-student ratio at Toledo Early College?
Generally there is one teacher for every 18 to 21 students.

Do parents need a parking pass to come to Toledo Early College for activities or parent conferences?
Yes. Parents will need to display a UT parking whenever visiting Toledo Early College. Otherwise parents are liable for parking tickets. Parking passes, good only for the Scott Park campus and can be purchased for $15 in the main office at Toledo Early College. During special events, such as informational meetings, parents are not required to display UT parking passes. Temporary parking passes, usually good for one day, are available free of charge, with photo identification, in Rocket Hall at UT.

How do parents communicate with students’ teachers?
Mandatory conferences, individual conferences, e-mail and grade book Internet-based type programs and telephone conversations are primary methods parents may communicate with teachers.

Will students have lockers?
Freshmen and sophomores will be assigned locker partners. Lockers are brand new and are the property of Toledo Early College. Students can not deface, decorate or personalize lockers. Such acts will be considered vandalism. Students are required to use their locks on lockers.

What happens if students become ill while at Toledo Early College? Is there a school nurse?
There is not a school nurse. Parents are notified when students are ill. It is imperative that all information on students Emergency Medical Cards (EMC) is current and complete. Toledo Early College staff may have to rely on EMC information to notify parents when students become ill.
